Ben Johnson, Tokyo Pool, 2006

“Ben Johnson’s hyper-attentive and minutely detailed paintings are paeans to an architecture devoted to light, shadow and interior space. His vision, enacted in paint as well as photography, is utopian, idealized and spare; the subject is reduced to essence, silence and a kind of spiritual purity.”

The Art of Collecting

For some, the desire to collect art gradually develops in the process of creating a home, or springs from an earlier enjoyment of collecting diverse things. Others describe a pivotal revelatory moment that engenders a lifelong passion.

Whatever the spark, one epiphany leads to another as the quest becomes more personal, more about relationships that develop with artists or cultures. The circumference of the world grows larger in a self-propelling process fueled by fascination and love.

The collector, as artist, engages with a singular eye and sensibility, trusts the compelling inner attraction to particular aesthetic forms, and commits to the unfolding creative process of the collection — a work of art in itself.
